It looks like Nintendo asked Apple to make them a controller.

I had a post typed out this morning about how it must be a hoax, becuase no one would do that to a new system. I thought "oh man, Nintendo really is over." But then I started reading about all of this stuff.

  • This isn't the only controller they will release
  • GameCube controllers (and games) are fully compatible
  • It senses movement in three dimensions (roll, pitch, yaw) and this feature will be used in games
  • Turn it sideways and (what's this?) it's the original 8-bit NES controller

The simplicity makes sense since they have already announced that their ENTIRE catalog will be playable on this system. Who needs 24 buttons and 3 sticks to play Mario Bros. and Double Dribble? The remote control aspect makes sense because they want people to relate to it as a multimedia center, not just a video game system.

Nintendo is smart as shit if you ask me. Again, I had the same reaction at first, but imagine you were going up against Sony and M$ and you knew that it was absolutely impossible to beat them straight up. No matter how powerful you make this system or how many great games you have for it, the next round of consoles is already lost.

SO instead, play a different game...flip the script on them and innovate. Break the mold and do something no one else has the balls to do. Will it win you the battle? No. Will it be used by everyone for every game? No. Will it be enough to make your console different enough that people may by it even if they have one of the others? Possibly. Will it give your brand an identity that will sell to non-gamers and casual gamers? Yes.

Nintendo knows they won't get the hardcore gamers this time around, so instead of playing number 3, they are forcing themselves into a new category. I think it's genius (and I will continue to do so, even while I plug in my Wavebird to play Zelda and Metroid 3).
