Website Back Up
As some of you heard, I had a serious NAS failure and as a result my VMs (and therefore the website) were down. Luckily, after almost a week, I was able to rebuild the array and bring the NAS back up. Let me know if you notice anything weird or not working correctly.

Old Forum Posts Restored
Through some miracle (and a lot of hard work), I have managed to restore all of the posts from the old forum. Some of the formatting is a little weird (especially with links and pictures) but let me know if you see any posts that are just totally messed up. I may not have converted all of the users or other variables correctly, but so far every post I've checked seems correct. I have also set all of the old posts as locked, but let me know if you want one unlocked so you can bump it or continue a conversation from years ago.

Ventrilo Downtime - 2/10/2008 3-7am CST
This notification is to let you know that we will be performing emergency network maintenance this Saturday night (I.e., 02/10/2008) at 3:00 AM CST. This maintenance window will last approximately 4-6 hours and during this time you may not be able to access your Ventrilo voice server, or experience high latency, and/or packet loss.
We are working on installing two brand new routers to replace our core infrastructure in the facility. While we do not anticipate any issues with this move, the full 4-6 hour window may need to be used.
Thank you!

Hosted Ventrilo
We are now using a hosted Ventrilo Server. What this means is that it should always be up, whether my stupid DSL is up or not, and we should not ever have any bandwidth issues. We can also go beyond the 8-person limit and start recruiting again, should we ever find a game we are going to stick with for a while.
Make sure you download the new client and connect to the new server. Use the links at the top right ------7

Microsoft to extend Xbox 360 warranty, take $1 billion hit
From CNet: Microsoft said on Thursday that it will take a $1 billion charge as it extends the warranty on the Xbox 360, after an investigation shows the game console can be prone to hardware failures.
"As a result of what Microsoft views as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, the company conducted extensive investigations into potential sources of general hardware failures," Microsoft said in a statement. Microsoft said its probe found "a number of factors" that can cause a general hardware failure indicated by three red flashing lights on the console. The company said that, in addition to extending the warranty, it has made unspecified design changes to the product.
Microsoft said it will cover machines that experience such failures for up to three years from the date of purchase. To cover the cost of the new policy, Microsoft said it will take a pretax charge of $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion in its just-ended quarter.
"The majority of Xbox 360 owners are having a great experience with their console and have from day one," Entertainment & Devices Division President Robbie Bach said in a statement. "But, this problem has caused frustration for some of our customers and for that, we sincerely apologize."
Microsoft said it will reimburse customers who have already paid for repairs for the hardware problem that is indicated by the three flashing lights.
Reports of glitches with the Xbox 360 began cropping up shortly after its November 2005 release.

AMD to buy ATI for $5.4B
ATI, which makes chipsets and graphics chips for PCs, also makes a host of semiconductors for consumer products, such high definition TVs and cellphones.
The new offerings would broaden AMD's package of products as it takes on Intel (INTC), the world's biggest chipmaker that has long supplied a wider portfolio. In addition to supplying microprocessors, Intel sells so-called chipsets, which connect a microprocessor to a PC's other core components, and graphics chips, which power images rendered by computer games and internet video.
Under terms approved unanimously by both companies' boards of directors, AMD will pay $4.2 billion in cash and 57 million in AMD shares to acquire all of ATI's outstanding stock, according to a news release.
Based on AMD's closing share price of $18.21 on Friday, the deal valued ATI's shares at $20.47, a premium of almost 24% compared with ATI's Friday's closing price of $16.56 on the Nasdaq.
AMD, which has been shelling out billions to add factory capacity so it can better compete with Intel, will pay for the acquisition with the help of a $2.5 billion loan from Morgan Stanley.
AMD expects the deal to contribute "slightly" to earnings next year and add "meaningfully" to profit by 2008. The purchase will save the combined company about $75 million by the end of 2007.
An acquisition of ATI "would make AMD a bigger player with a more diversified portfolio," said Nathan Brookwood, an analyst with research firm Insight 64. It "would certainly put AMD on a more equal footing relative to Intel."
The deal also put competitive pressure on Nvidia (NVDA), the other dominant maker of graphics chips. Nvidia has competed against Intel in selling chipsets and graphics chips while counting on AMD for sales of those products.

Scrotie
Steve Sakoda, the man we all know and love as ?Scrotie?, was killed in Iraq on April 29th, 2006. Sergeant Steve M. Sakoda, 29, of Hilo, Hawaii, died of injuries sustained in Baghdad, Iraq, on April 29, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations. Sakoda was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. He is survived by his lovely wife Michelle, who we have all had the pleasure to get to know. Please keep your thoughts with her during this time.
Scrotie had been part of FJB from the very beginning, 6 years ago, and we wouldn?t have been the same without him. He was always making us laugh either by something he said, something he sang and played on his ukulele, or simply by typing dirty pictures into a chat box. Scrotie was always friendly, unselfish, dependable and giving. He was the one person you could always count on. Many of my most memorable moments, since the inception of FJB, involved Scrotie in one way or another. They seem trivial now, given that they occurred only over the internet and in video games, and are a far cry from what he did in real life, but I think they say a lot about his personality and they reflect very highly on his character and the type of genuine person that he was. I am sure that he meant just as much, if not more, to the men that he served with.
? Back in the day, Scrotie couldn?t type very well, but he always managed to get his point across, in some creative way or another?usually with pictures.
? Scrotie was always the first one out of the base with a nanite scout to heal the base or a bomber, despite being one of the best gunners around.
? He was one of the first true masters of the ?scout push? that could turn a slow-moving bomber into a silly-fast-moving bomber by ramming it just the right way.
? ?I love you mines!? was his response to all of us, when we told him he was crazy for using his escape pod to clear a mine field around an Aleph?which he unselfishly did, time and time again to get our ships through safely.
? Scrotie was always the last line of defense, be it himself, a mine, or a well placed turret. You could always depend on him to back everyone else up.
? Drfatchick?what else can you say about that?
? Despite being one of the more skilled players, he always played the medic or engineer role, unselfishly, to benefit the group as a whole. He was always sacrificing his own glory to make us all better.
? Scrotie always liked to park vehicles in funny places?on Neo?s head, on Razzle?s head, on Crawdad?s head, upside down, sideways, etc. Any landing you could walk away from was a good one?but not near as good as one that ended in a destructive fireball.
? Scrotie escorted my bomber in a P51 for 2 hours one night, just enough time for both of us to run out of fuel over the enemy base. If you know Scrotie, you know it was a fun 2 hours.
? He was always willing to take time away from what he was doing to help someone, no matter whether they were brand new or had been around forever. I can?t count the number of trades, across many different games, where I had to close a trade window because Scrotie was trying to pass me a small fortune.
? Scrotie?s improvised ukulele songs were always the most popular on FJBRadio.
? Who could forget the hum of the laptop fan?
? There were many occasions where he had us all laughing so hard there were tears.
? Scrotie had an unhealthy infatuation with the whiter, fluffier kind?and had the best sheep call of all time.
Scrotie was one of the coolest people I have ever had the honor to be associated with. Even though I never got to meet him face-to-face, I can honestly say that he was one of my closest friends. I will always miss his personality, his laughter and especially just having him on my side, in game and in life. He was a hero to me then, he is a hero to me now, and I will never forget the time he shared with all of us. He will always be missed.

Server Outage
We are experiencing power problems in our Virginia Datacenter. There is a power outage affecting the entire building.
We are running on backup power, but the generators have not taken the power load from the UPS. Therefore, we have taken the rather extreme action of shutting down servers before we experience irreparable hardware failure.
We are in constant communication with the engineers and expect to have the situation rectified ASAP.
We apologize for this inconvenience and will update you as soon as possible.
- The building where our datacenter is located lost power.
- The UPS systems did function properly and carried the power load.
- The generators did start, however the transfer switch that moves load from commercial power to generator power did not function properly.
- The UPS batteries were drained because the generator power could not be transferred.
- The UPS system does not power the HVAC units, so the temperature inside the datacenter climbed very quickly, forcing us to shut down ALL servers to prevent heat from damaging hardware and data.
The generators and UPS systems are the responsibility of the building owners which we are leasing space from, and they were tested and expected to work properly. It has not yet been determined why the generator power was not transferred properly.

Catalyst 5.6 Cures Cancer
ATI'S CATALYST team managed to do a great job in the past few quarters. These guys were working hard to improve software support and month by month the team has managed to release a new Catalyst driver. It improves some compatibility and other options with every single revision.
While most of ATI's driver updates are just bug fixes, this time ATI will give you a much needed free performance increase, coming with the new Catalyst 5.6 driver.
ATI will soon introduce its Catalyst 5.6 driver and we have the feeling that this might happen on the seventh of June, we might be wrong about the date, it's not yet specific but you never know.
Once you install this new driver you should see around ten per cent plus performance increase in 3Dmark05, Aquamark 3 and Halo and Tomb Raider: AOD games and benchmarks. ATI did this by using some Z optimisations, removing unseen pixels before running through the pixel shaders. I guess that this is an allowed method and Halo might be running even fifteen per cent faster.
The Chronicles of Riddick will work up to fifteen per cent faster than with the old Catalyst 5.5 drivers and ATI did more efficient storage of vertex data and gained some performance that way too.
Doom 3 will work almost twenty per cent faster than with Catalyst 5.5 as ATI made more efficient use of memory.
Even games such as Call of Duty will benefit from this new driver as the driver team managed to increase the game efficiency resulting in close to ten per cent faster performance.
The game that will benefit the most is Lock on: Modern Air combat where you will be able to see an incredible fifty per cent performance increase just by installing a new 5.6 Catalyst driver.
ATI catalyst AI enables texture compression of the clouds resulting with no visual impact and massive performance impact at the same time. Sounds good to us if it works like described. We know that Nvidia test team will definitely try to find any image quality flaws and problems and scream to the rest of the world if it found any difference. We would do it too so let's hope that all is correct here.
The new Catalyst comes in just a few days, it's free and I recommend you get it, if you have an ATI card, and enjoy it.

MS to launch Xbox 2 on 12 May
MS to launch Xbox 2 on 12 May
By Tony Smith
Published Monday 11th April 2005 15:28 GMT
Microsoft won't play second fiddle to Sony next month, the company tacitly said today. It will launch Xbox 2 in a half-hour show on MTV four days before its rival reveals the PlayStation 3.
Late last week it appeared both companies had planned to launch their respective next-generation consoles on 16 May - a day before the start of the E3 games industry show, natch - at different events in Los Angeles. Sony's launch was - and still is, we assume - scheduled to take place at 3PM PST. Microsoft's meeting was booked for 6PM.
Dismissing E3 as a "closed-door, trade-only event", Microsoft VP Peter Moore said the company wanted to "talk directly to the consumer".
The televised launch will be hosted by Lord of the Rings star Elijah 'Frodo' Wood, and should see sports, movie and music celebrities come on stage to tout the next-generation console's media and gaming features,
GamesIndustry.biz reports.
Microsoft is expected to announce an Autumn ship date for Xbox 2, ahead of the Christmas 2005 sales season. Rival next-generation consoles from Sony and Nintendo are not expected to ship until 2006.

Kill Bill To Be Released 6 Times On DVD
On the first day of its DVD release, "Kill Bill Vol. 1," Quentin Tarantino's ultraviolent, ultrastylish revenge orgy starring Uma Thurman, sold 2 million copies and made a whopping $40 million. Customers snapping up this fairly bare-bones disc -- in addition to the film, there's only a making-of documentary, a "Vol. 2" trailer, and video from the Japanese all-girl band the 5.6.7.8's, who perform in the film -- probably did so expecting a later version featuring both parts of the film. ("Kill Bill Vol. 2" recently opened in theaters.) But what customers buying the disc didn't know was that Miramax is actually planning six different DVD releases of the "Kill Bill" films.
Here's how Rick Sands, Miramax's chief operating officer, explained it to The New York Times last week:
" `Vol. 1' goes out, `Vol. 2' goes out, then `Vol. 1 Special Edition,' `Vol. 2 Special Edition,' the two-pack, then the Tarantino collection as a boxed set for Christmas," he said. "It's called multiple bites at the apple."

Apple told to halt 'world's fastest' claims for G5
The Council of Better Business Bureaus has recommended that Apple Computer discontinue comparative performance claims regarding its Power Mac G5 desktop.
Acting on a tip from Apple rival Dell, the council's National Advertising Division (NAD) "determined that the evidence provided by Apple did not provide a reasonable basis for its broad unqualified claims that its Power Mac G5 is 'the world's fastest, most powerful personal computer' and that it 'edged out the competition on integer.'"
In a statement Thursday, NAD also said it took issue with Apple's claim regarding the computer's 64-bit processor. The "advertiser's claim, 'the world's first 64-bit processor for personal computers,' could reasonably be interpreted to apply to workstations, in the context in which it was presented." This claim was unsupported by evidence, according to NAD. The organization said that although the advertisement had run its course, it recommended that Apple "modify this claim to effectively limit it to personal computers."
According to NAD, Apple said in a statement that its ad campaign has already run its course and that it "will be mindful of NAD's views in its future advertising." The company was not immediately available for further comment on the issue.
Apple unveiled the Power Mac G5 last June.
A Dell representative said in an e-mail: We "notified NAD because we felt there were some inaccuracies in Apple's advertisement and wanted to act on behalf of consumers in the marketplace who deserve accurate information on which to base their purchase decisions...Essentially, we felt that clarity in the marketplace benefits consumers, and NAD agreed."
Apple's G5 advertising had previously been criticized. In November, British TV regulators banned an Apple ad for the machine, saying its claim to the title "world's fastest personal computer" is not fully supported.
That decision followed doubts by analysts and others about the benchmark tests Apple used to justify the claims.

Website Back from the Dead
As some of you already know, the old webhost decided to shut down and run away without giving me notice, refunds or anything else. If you see JERREMY CHARLES or ADDVALUEHOST.COM any where in the world or on the internet, please kick their ass or let me know so I can do it for you. It has been a royal pain getting stuff together and trying to reclaim our domains. In the process we gained a new domain and it will be the new domain of the site (fatjawsbadness.net).
Instead of looking for another shady host I have started my own webhosting company and I will be hosting the site myself. Because of that, please let me know anytime that the site is not working right or if you cannot connect to it. It has cost me a small fortune to get everything working again, and I do NOT want it to wasted on the site not running as desired.
Those of you who had fatjawsbadness.org emails or want a fatjawsbadness.net/org email, please let me know which you prefer so I can reactivate/create them. Also let me know if there are any huge files that you want me to put up for download now that we have a ton of space and one FAT ASS pipe.
Along with the change, please note that the Ventrilo server is now hosted at fatjawsbadness.net instead of fjb.hopto.org. Please let me know if you have any problems with Ventrilo or the site as well as if there is anything that you would like for me to change. Your enjoyment is the best thanks I can get.
So enjoy.

FBI Busts Suspected HL2 Source Code Crooks
The FBI kicked in some doors and tooks some sweet hardware from some kids suspected of stealing the Half-Life2 Source Code.
Link to Slashdot
Reports are sketchy, but witnesses heard a young man screaming, "You got the wrong Man! Cheatin' ATi-nVidia-soft! Cheatin' drivers, to hell with you all, I want my ingots and embryoes!"
Masquerazzle did not immediately return our calls for a statement. We were able to track down Neo, however, who reported that all is well and that the new crank flows like honey when you toss one up right. Grax was unavailable for comment.

AO:Shadowlands Milestone Met
Players of the Shadowland expansion have penetrated the highly secretive game area known as Pandemonium. This area, never revealed or talked about before it was finally unearthed by players, is a high level area that very few players have ever entered - the area is designed to give players the most challenging game experience possible in Funcom's sci-fi flavored MMOG. The seventh level of Shadowlands is very difficulty to get into, forcing players who want to enter to take a hazardous journey through underwater challenges, poisonous fog, hell frozen over and unbearable heat. Several members of guild group Fat Jaws Badness....... I mean Synergy Factor

were the very first individuals to accomplish this major milestone. While the ultimate boss of Pandemonium has yet to be beaten (according to Funcom), if we have learned one thing from MMOG power players, it's that no monster is unbeatable and no challenge is impossible.

The Great and Powerful Coz
Greetings and Salutations,
Just thought I'd post another quick update.
The order for my DSL line is officially in and barring a natural disaster or SBC living up to their normal reputation for fucking things up, i should be up and running by next week.
In the mean time i've been trying to check out the boards from work.
With that in mind, give me a heads up on what the 'Game of the Week' is so i can be ready to hit the ground running.
And please warn Pod that i'm gonna have to make up for lost time, so he should be ready for the verbal assault of the century when i get on.
Until next time!
Your favorite Galactic SmartAss,
Coz

New Themes
I have added 3 new themes for you all to chose from. All three of them are designed to fill the entire screen, so they look real nice if you are using a higher resolution than 800x600. Two of the new themes are identical in everyway but color, and this should be obvious by their names. One is a flash theme that I do not recommend for low-bandwidth users.
To change your theme: Click "View Account" on the left menu and then click "Select the theme." Keep in mind, however, that from this point on, the site will look different to different people.
As with any addition to the site, I would appreciate testing and feedback. Even if you like the current theme, I would appreciate it if you would atleast give the others a quick look (but avoid the flash one if you have a slow connection).

Database-Driven Roster System Completed
Well, after almost 30 hours of coding, I have completed a dynamic database-driven roster system for our site. The first roster up is Battlefield, and I encourage each of you who play BF to please update your info and tell me if you have any problems. You can update your info by clicking "View Account" on the left and then clicking "Edit My Games." The fields there are not final, and I'm open to suggestions as to what you all would like to see on the BF roster.
Now for the really exciting part....the code is all finished so in the future when we want to add another game, all I have to do is create the DB and POOF the new items are there for you to edit and the new roster takes form.
BTW, I spent a HUGE amount of time and energy making this thing so at least ACT like you care, even if you don't.

EA Ships Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome for the PC
Expansion Pack to the Award-Winning First-Person Multiplayer Game Focuses on the Italian and Sicilian Campaigns of WWII
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. Feb. 4, 2003--Enemy Spotted! Medic! It's time once again to break out the bomber jackets as EA today began shipping the highly anticipated multiplayer expansion pack Battlefield 1942(TM): The Road to Rome. The PC game offers more maps, vehicles, and fighting forces including the French free forces and Italian military.
Focusing on the Italian and Sicilian campaigns of WWII, players can choose to fight on six new maps including Operation Husky (Sicily) and the battles for Anzio and Monte Cassino. Each map contains highly detailed environments featuring elements such as Italian houses, Mediterranean trees and the Monte Cassino Monastery.
Controllable vehicles are the heart of the original Battlefield 1942 experience and The Road to Rome delivers by offering eight new vehicles, including the German BF-110 and British Mosquito twin-engine fighter-bombers, in addition to the more than 30 vehicles in the original title. There are also new Italian, British and German vehicles and anti-tank guns.
Staying true to the Battlefield 1942 massive multiplayer legacy, The Road to Rome supports up to 64 players on select maps. In order to achieve victory in this multiplayer game, teamwork and cooperation are requirements. This allows players to fully experience WWII combat. Playing as one of several infantry classes, gamers can control many new weapons including an Italian assault rifle, a British submachine gun and bayoneted rifles. Players can also command numerous land vehicles, ships and aircraft such as a "tankbusting" German tank, the Sturmgeschutz and a new US medium light armor tank the M3 Grant.
The game uses the proprietary Refractor 2 engine, a robust 3D rendering engine to fully flesh out the action. Though multiplayer experience is the focus of The Road to Rome, there is a single player action mode that features advanced artificial intelligence with no scripting, offering players a completely different experience every time they play.
Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome was developed by Sweden-based Digital Illusions. EA is publishing and distributing the game for the PC under the EA GAMES(TM) brand. The game carries an ESRB rating of "T" (Teen) with a descriptor of "Violence" and MSRP US$19.95. The original Battlefield 1942 has earned several distinguished awards, including: IGN Overall Game of the Year, GameSpy Multiplayer Game of the Year and GameSpot's Best Action Game on PC. The original Battlefield 1942 game is required in order to play The Road to Rome. Product information can be found on the game's web site at http://www.battlefield1942.ea.com/
